New Apprenticeship Program to Produce Aviation Mechanics and Technicians for Ft. Rucker Area

Alabama’s need for aviation mechanics and technicians is soaring, and a new registered apprenticeship program will begin filling that need with trained and qualified individuals.  The Alabama Office of Apprenticeship has partnered with M1 Support Services and the Alabama Aviation College to develop an apprenticeship program that combines paid work experience and classroom instruction, all while earning a portable, nationally recognized credential.

Dale County School Recognized as One of State’s Top 12

A northwest Dale County school has been recognized for its reading program as being one of the best statewide by the Alabama Reading Initiative. 

Ariton School recently received recognition for being one of the top 12 reading spotlight schools in the state of Alabama. Currently, Ariton School is the only school in the Wiregrass area to hold the distinction.

County Employees to Benefit from 15% COLA

Dale County employees and retirees will see some relief from increasing inflation in September. On Tuesday, during its regularly held meeting, the Dale County Commission, in two separate actions, approved a 15% Cost of Living increase (COLA) for all county employees and a one-time lump sum payment to retirees as a longevity bonus.

The 15% COLA is a $700,000 annual budget adjustment for the county and includes the county’s portion of employee benefit packages. The longevity bonus resulted in a $38,456 budget adjustment.

Love’s Reaches $2.2 Million in Gas Tax Rebate

Mayor Mark Blankenship announced the final payout of the $2.2 million gas tax rebate to Love’s Truck Stop at the Ozark City Council meeting held August 2. The final payout of $98,453.43 was presented to Love’s Manager, John Senn, at last Tuesday’s council meeting. The check represented the last three-quarters of gas taxes received from Love’s.

Ozark Dale County Library Begins Move to New Location

The Ozark Dale County Library began the arduous process of moving into its new location on N. Union Avenue last month, with over 20,000 books and other materials to sort and reshelve, as well as finding new homes for the wide variety of historical displays that the library has kept safe for the citizens of Ozark and Dale County. McCraney Makes Another Bid For Bond Release

The suspect in the controversial Ozark, AL murder trial has once again requested to be released on bond.

Coley McCraney, who has been charged and is currently on trial for the 1999 murders of  J.B. Beasley and Tracie Hawlett, has recently requested to be released on bond. According to his legal team, McCraney does not pose a danger to the community, nor a flight risk, as he has no criminal history, and his family has resided in the Ozark and Dothan areas for most of his life. McCraney’s previous request for bond was denied in 2019.

Local American Veterans Post Has Opened

Daleville, Alabama —- The Southeast Alabama American Veterans Post 7 has officially opened in Daleville, Alabama. American Veterans, or AMVETS for short, finds its beginnings in 1944 as many veterans were helping returning war veterans to obtain their earned benefits from the federal government.  As the number of veterans swelled to millions, it was realized there was a need for a national organization to provide this assistance. Then on December 10, 1944, eighteen representatives from nine veterans’ organizations worked together to form what is now AMVETS.

Area Students from Five Dale County High Schools Attend Leadership Program Orientation

The Dale County Youth Leadership Program (DCYLP) held orientation for 17 area students at Hoppergrass Restaurant in Ozark last week on Thursday, August 18. Students from Ariton, Carroll, Dale County, Daleville, and G.W. Long were among the seventeen who participated.

The DCYLP is made possible through generous donations from local businesses and organizations.  The program has local board members from the schools and from the business sector that help organize and facilitate monthly meetings.
