Star’s Sister Papers, The Calais Advertiser, and Machias Valley News Observer, Earn 42 Awards from Maine Press Association

The Southern Star’s sister papers, The Calais Advertiser and Machias Valley News Observer, were recognized this past weekend at the Maine Press Association Annual State Conference held at the Atlantic Oceanside Hotel and Event Center in Bar Harbor, Maine, on October 22. The Calais Advertiser was presented with 24 awards for its exceptional journalism work, and Machias Valley News Observer received 18 awards, for a total of 42 awards combined between the two Washington County publications.

Ozark Dale County Library Host Long Awaited Grand Opening

The Ozark Dale County Library held its long-awaited grand opening celebration with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at its new location at 296 North Union Avenue in Ozark on Tuesday, October 25. Celebrating with grilled hot dogs, roasted corn, and ice cream, the library opened its doors at 10 a.m., welcoming patrons to browse the approximately 30,000 books and other materials the library has available for checkout.

The G.W. Long Rebels held off St. Lukes 19-16 in the first round of the 2022 AHSAA Class 2A Football Playoffs Friday, November 4. With the win, the Rebels advance to the second round of the playoffs and will travel to Notasulga, Alabama, to take on the Class 2A number 3 ranked Reeltown Rebels Friday, November 11.

Wayne Davis of Skipperville will be awarded the Farm Service Award at the Farm-City Banquet posthumously this next week on Tuesday, November 15. Davis is being recognized for his leadership and dedication to the agricultural, forestry, and wildlife fields throughout his life. Unfortunately, Davis passed away in March 2019. His family will receive the award in his stead.

Ariton Native Returns to Home County as County Engineer

When the County Engineer position was posted for Dale County, Ariton native Matthew Murphy did not need a second thought before submitting his resume for consideration. Murphy, a lifelong resident of Dale County, received his Civil Engineering Degree from Auburn University in 2000. Four years later, he was licensed as a professional engineer.

Murphy began working with Barbour County as the Assistant County Engineer in 2000, accepting the position as Barbour County’s County Engineer in 2016.

Longtime Library Clerk Retires

Darnell Johnson is an institution at the Ozark Dale County Library, having worked there for almost 22 years. On Tuesday, November 8, one month before his 22nd year anniversary, the Ozark community had the opportunity to say goodbye and wish Johnson well in his retirement. The library celebrated with a retirement cake and hors d’oeuvres.

“It’s time. It’s just time,” Johnson said of his decision to retire.

T-Mobile is planning the expected opening of its Ozark location just ahead of the holidays. The new store in Ozark is expected to open Monday, November 28 and will be located on Highway 231 in front of Grocery Outlet. Ozark is among five Alabama communities in which T-Mobile chose to expand its retail footprint. Attalla, Bay Minette, Greenville, and Moulton have recently seen new T-Mobile retail locations open as well.

Flags for Forgotten Soldiers Day Declared in Daleville

Daleville Mayor Jayme Stayton signed a Proclamation declaring November 15, 2022 as Flags for Forgotten Soldiers Day during the Daleville City Council meeting held November 15 at Daleville City Hall. 660 American flags were on display in front of City Hall, the Daleville Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Daleville Cultural and Convention Center complex. The intent of the flags is to bring awareness to the 22 veteran suicides that occur every day throughout a given month. Flags were placed by Boy Scout Troop 88.
