Eagles’ track and field teams compete in Troy

The Carroll High School (CHS) Track and Field team competed in the Charles Henderson High School Invitational Track Meet Friday, March 24. The girls and boys teams each placed fifth overall at the meet.

In both the girls' long jump and high jump categories, Carroll’s Alana Coleman earned first place. In the long jump, Coleman soared a stunning 16’6. In the high jump, Coleman scored 4’10. Coleman also placed second in the girls' 300m hurdles with a time of 54.14 seconds.

Ozark celebrates largest Crawdad Festival in event’s 17 years

It was a fun-filled day of celebration, good eating, and overall joy as large crowds gathered in downtown Ozark for the 17th Annual Crawdad Festival. This year’s festival was the largest in the event’s history, with nearly 100 more vendors than last year.

Vietnam Veterans Memorial officially dedicated during solemn ceremony

Local veterans who lost their lives during the Vietnam War have finally received the special recognition they deserved. Veterans of the Vietnam War, local dignitaries, and other community members gathered Wednesday, March 29, at the site of what is now officially the Vietnam Veterans War Memorial. The solemn ceremony and ribbon-cutting event marked the formal commemoration and dedication of the memorial honoring those fallen warriors who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country.

Wiregrass United Way presents $400,000 in grants; Ozark organizations receive $61,250

The Wiregrass United Way presented $400,000 to 22 local nonprofit agencies around the Wiregrass over the last two weeks. Funding for these grants was received from the Wiregrass Foundation after the Wiregrass United Way completed the challenge of reaching their yearly fundraising goal of $2,777,777.77.

Ansley Godwin named to State Teacher of the Year “Sweet Sixteen”

Carroll High School’s Ansley Godwin was announced as a finalist for Alabama Teacher of the Year on Wednesday, April 5. The State of Alabama Department of Education released the names of the “State’s Sweet 16 educators” last week in a press release. The Alabama Teacher of the Year program is one of the state’s oldest and most esteemed recognition programs. This year’s 16 finalists have emerged from a highly professional group of more than 150 top educators who submitted their official applications for this state honor.

Carroll High School’s (CHS) boys and girls soccer teams had a winning streak this past week as they faced off against Greenville, Charles Henderson, and G.W. Long as region play comes to a close. 

On Monday, April 17, the Eagles’ boys team faced off against region opponent Greenville in a shutout victory for CHS. The Eagles swept Greenville, 10-0.

McCraney trial begins; jurors hear testimony from prosecution, defense

The long-awaited capital murder trial of Coley McCraney is underway. McCraney has been held without bond in the Dale County Jail since his March 2019 arrest. He is accused of the 1999 double murders of 17-year-olds J.B. Beasley and Tracie Hawlett. He is also charged with the rape of J.B. Beasley. Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall is prosecuting the case at the request of Dale County District Attorney Kirke Adams.
