Carroll High School boys and girls soccer win region titles and will host first round of playoffs

The CHS boys and girls soccer teams faced off against Eufaula on Wednesday, April 26, in the game that determined whether they would make it to the playoffs. Both teams clinched region titles with wins over rival Eufaula.

In the girls' game, the Lady Eagles celebrated a shutout victory as they allowed Eufaula no opportunities to score a goal. They wasted no time as they beat the Lady Tigers 10-0.

Annual Circle of Prayer draws large crowd; Bible reading marathon kicks off

Downtown Ozark was filled with songs of worship and prayer on Sunday, April 30, as people from over 20 churches of different denominations gathered on the Dale County Courthouse lawn to sing old-fashioned spiritual hymns and form a large prayer circle to pray for local, state, and federal officials; residents of the Wiregrass; law enforcement officers; and other groups. This is the second year members of Chalkhead Baptist Church (CBC) have organized the prayer circle event.

Dale County Government offices to be equipped with cameras

The Dale County Commission approved a capital expense for a video camera system for the Dale County Government building in a 3-1 vote during the Commission meeting held Tuesday, April 25. The system is expected to cost $12,226 and consists of four video cameras to be placed on the rear of the building, in the solid waste lobby, and two in the commission meeting room.

Jury sentences McCraney to life after guilty verdict

The verdict is in. Sentencing has been passed down. Coley McCraney was found guilty on all charges against him in the 1999 murders of JB Beasley and Tracie Hawlett on Wednesday, April 26. After just 13 minutes of deliberation McCraney was sentenced to serve life in prison without parole on Thursday, April 27.

Colby signs with Wallace Community College

Carroll High School senior Zoey Colby signed a full music scholarship with Wallace Community College while her family and band members looked on.  While at Wallace, Colby plans to pursue a certification in welding.  Her CHS band director, Brenda Simechak, put Zoey in touch with Dr. Paul Morelli at Wallace Community College.  Through this connection, Colby auditioned for and earned a spot in the jazz band at Wallace Community College.

First Ozark United Methodist Church was host to the National Day of Prayer Breakfast held on Thursday, May 4. This year’s speaker was Henry County Probate Judge David Money, who spoke on how God has worked in his life.

Judge William Filmore withdrew from the Court of Criminal Appeals race on Tuesday, May 9. In a news release, Filmore stated that he will run for re-election as Circuit Judge in Dale and Geneva Counties, his current position, in the 2024 election.

Ozark EMS prepares for the future

With volunteerism dwindling in today’s society, Ozark Emergency Medical Services is preparing for the future. Ozark Mayor Mark Blankenship and EMS Deputy Director, Kristy Clark spoke to Rotarians at last Tuesday’s meeting on April 25.

“We made some major changes to our EMS program a while back,” Blankenship said in his introduction of Clark. “We went back to a public safety director and named Charles Ward to that position.”

The ceremony was held on a slightly overcast, windy morning at Howze Parade Field with friends and families of the two gentlemen honored, some of who had traveled over 1,000 miles to see the event.

Lady Eagles’ varsity softball falls short after intense area tournament game against Eufaula

The Carroll High School (CHS) Lady Eagles’ varsity softball team played their hearts out at the 5A Area 3 Tournament hosted at Rehobeth High School on Tuesday, May 2. The Lady Eagles faced off against the Eufaula Tigers in an intense matchup.

The Eagles led in the first inning with two runs. However, the Eufaula Tigers tied the game up during the second inning and then kicked things into high gear, scoring eight additional runs in the third.

The Enterprise JROTC held their annual Awards Ceremony at the high School Performing Arts Center at 10:00 on May10th. There was a bevy of Awards given to the Cadets before the announcement that COL (ret) Dennis Griffin would be retiring from the ROTC Program as Senior Army Instructor at the end of the school year. Col. Griffin will remain in the area and live in New Brockton.

Daleville High School JROTC Awards

On May 2nd, the Daleville High School Junior ROTC held their annual awards ceremony in the cafeteria. CW4 (Ret) Nate Barley acted as Master of Ceremonies and spoke highly of his cadets. The Color Guard’s Presentation of Colors was followed by an invocation. A short demonstration by the drill team preceded the awards. They recently placed second and fourth in state competition.

Belinda Thomas Calls for apology after racial slurs on State House floor

As State Representative Kenneth Paschal (R-AL73) was presenting a bill in the State House, he was verbally attacked by another representative, Juandalynn Givan (D-AL60) on Tuesday, May 2 resulting in demands for an apology from some members of the republican party. One such member is Newton’s City Councilwoman, Belinda Thomas. Since, Alabama Democrat vice chair Tabitha Isner has made statements referencing the confrontation between the two State Representatives.

D.A. Smith to experience changing of the guard

The girl who was always at school, who loved school will finally be leaving school this summer as Dr. Danelle Peterman, who has been principal at D.A. Smith Middle since 2011, wraps up her 30-year career in education. As she retires from Ozark City Schools, Jermaine Shakespeare, a native of Andalusia, will step up to take her place.

“I know I can just pass everything over to him,” says Peterman of Shakespeare. She says he has been observing her and is prepared to take over.

21 years of competition no match for a 35-year-old bond; Friends compete at Special Olympics

It’s not often you find a friendship that lasts for 35 years. It’s even rarer to find one that has lasted since birth. Even more special is the bond created between these two friends with special needs as they compete side by side, against one another in Special Olympics Rhythmic Gymnastics and other events. Beth Olive and Erica Watts, both 35 years old, of north Shelby County, have been friends practically since birth and have been competing since they were seven years old.

Ariton Purple Cats clinch State Championship

Ariton has taken home the trophy. The Ariton Varsity Purple Cats clinched the championship title after a long season. The Purple Cats faced off against the Vincent Yellowjackets in a two-game faceoff on Monday-Tuesday, May 15 and 16.

In the first game, Ariton took the lead in the seventh inning to defeat the Vincent Yellow Jackets Varsity baseball team.

Alabama sets records in unemployment lows

The State of Alabama is seeing record lows in unemployment rates with April at 2.2%, a decrease of .3% from April 2022.

In a written statement, Governor Kay Ivey said, “Yet again, we see the resiliency of our state’s workforce. When Alabama works, Alabama families thrive, and records are broken time and time again.”

The number of unemployed people in the state in April set a new low as well at just 51,462, down almost 4,700 from last year.

 Mary Berry Brown Memorial Library receives national grant

Midland City, AL — Mary Berry Brown Memorial Library in Midland City has been selected to participate in Libraries Transforming Communities: Accessible Small and Rural Communities, an American Library Association (ALA) initiative that provides community engagement and accessibility resources to small and rural libraries to help them better serve people with disabilities.

The competitive award comes with a $20,000 grant that will help the library create a sensory space for those in the community who cope with neurodiversity.

Dale County municipalities among 128 labeled incompliant by Department of Revenue

According to a press release received from the Alabama Department of Revenue, 128 municipalities are noncompliant and no longer allowed to levy taxes in their police jurisdiction. This includes several municipalities in Dale County.

The Alabama Department of Revenue posted a notice on May 15, 2023, informing taxpayers that the 128 municipalities referenced above failed to file an annual report required by Al Code State Statute 11-51-91 (2020).
