1. 21 years of competition no match for a 35-year-old bond; Friends compete at Special Olympics

    It’s not often you find a friendship that lasts for 35 years. It’s even rarer to find one that has lasted since birth. Even more special is the bond created between these two friends with special needs as they compete side by side, against one another in Special Olympics Rhythmic Gymnastics and other events. Beth Olive and Erica Watts, both 35 years old, of north Shelby County, have been friends practically since birth and have been competing since they were seven years old.

  2. D.A. Smith to experience changing of the guard

    The girl who was always at school, who loved school will finally be leaving school this summer as Dr. Danelle Peterman, who has been principal at D.A. Smith Middle since 2011, wraps up her 30-year career in education. As she retires from Ozark City Schools, Jermaine Shakespeare, a native of Andalusia, will step up to take her place.

    “I know I can just pass everything over to him,” says Peterman of Shakespeare. She says he has been observing her and is prepared to take over.

  3. Belinda Thomas Calls for apology after racial slurs on State House floor

    As State Representative Kenneth Paschal (R-AL73) was presenting a bill in the State House, he was verbally attacked by another representative, Juandalynn Givan (D-AL60) on Tuesday, May 2 resulting in demands for an apology from some members of the republican party. One such member is Newton’s City Councilwoman, Belinda Thomas. Since, Alabama Democrat vice chair Tabitha Isner has made statements referencing the confrontation between the two State Representatives.

  4. Daleville High School JROTC Awards

    On May 2nd, the Daleville High School Junior ROTC held their annual awards ceremony in the cafeteria. CW4 (Ret) Nate Barley acted as Master of Ceremonies and spoke highly of his cadets. The Color Guard’s Presentation of Colors was followed by an invocation. A short demonstration by the drill team preceded the awards. They recently placed second and fourth in state competition.

There was a bevy of Awards given to the Cadets before the announcement that COL (ret) Dennis Griffin would be retiring from the ROTC Program as Senior Army Instructor at the end of the school year.   6. Lady Eagles’ varsity softball falls short after intense area tournament game against Eufaula

    The Carroll High School (CHS) Lady Eagles’ varsity softball team played their hearts out at the 5A Area 3 Tournament hosted at Rehobeth High School on Tuesday, May 2. The Lady Eagles faced off against the Eufaula Tigers in an intense matchup.

    The Eagles led in the first inning with two runs. However, the Eufaula Tigers tied the game up during the second inning and then kicked things into high gear, scoring eight additional runs in the third.

The ceremony was held on a slightly overcast, windy morning at Howze Parade Field with friends and families of the two gentlemen honored, some of who had traveled over 1,000 miles to see the event.

  8. Ozark EMS prepares for the future

    With volunteerism dwindling in today’s society, Ozark Emergency Medical Services is preparing for the future. Ozark Mayor Mark Blankenship and EMS Deputy Director, Kristy Clark spoke to Rotarians at last Tuesday’s meeting on April 25.

    “We made some major changes to our EMS program a while back,” Blankenship said in his introduction of Clark. “We went back to a public safety director and named Charles Ward to that position.”

  11. Colby signs with Wallace Community College

    Carroll High School senior Zoey Colby signed a full music scholarship with Wallace Community College while her family and band members looked on.  While at Wallace, Colby plans to pursue a certification in welding.  Her CHS band director, Brenda Simechak, put Zoey in touch with Dr. Paul Morelli at Wallace Community College.  Through this connection, Colby auditioned for and earned a spot in the jazz band at Wallace Community College.

  12. Jury sentences McCraney to life after guilty verdict

    The verdict is in. Sentencing has been passed down. Coley McCraney was found guilty on all charges against him in the 1999 murders of JB Beasley and Tracie Hawlett on Wednesday, April 26. After just 13 minutes of deliberation McCraney was sentenced to serve life in prison without parole on Thursday, April 27.

  14. Dale County Government offices to be equipped with cameras

    The Dale County Commission approved a capital expense for a video camera system for the Dale County Government building in a 3-1 vote during the Commission meeting held Tuesday, April 25. The system is expected to cost $12,226 and consists of four video cameras to be placed on the rear of the building, in the solid waste lobby, and two in the commission meeting room.

  15. Annual Circle of Prayer draws large crowd; Bible reading marathon kicks off

    Downtown Ozark was filled with songs of worship and prayer on Sunday, April 30, as people from over 20 churches of different denominations gathered on the Dale County Courthouse lawn to sing old-fashioned spiritual hymns and form a large prayer circle to pray for local, state, and federal officials; residents of the Wiregrass; law enforcement officers; and other groups. This is the second year members of Chalkhead Baptist Church (CBC) have organized the prayer circle event.

  16. Carroll High School boys and girls soccer win region titles and will host first round of playoffs

    The CHS boys and girls soccer teams faced off against Eufaula on Wednesday, April 26, in the game that determined whether they would make it to the playoffs. Both teams clinched region titles with wins over rival Eufaula.

    In the girls' game, the Lady Eagles celebrated a shutout victory as they allowed Eufaula no opportunities to score a goal. They wasted no time as they beat the Lady Tigers 10-0.

  18. McCraney trial begins; jurors hear testimony from prosecution, defense

    The long-awaited capital murder trial of Coley McCraney is underway. McCraney has been held without bond in the Dale County Jail since his March 2019 arrest. He is accused of the 1999 double murders of 17-year-olds J.B. Beasley and Tracie Hawlett. He is also charged with the rape of J.B. Beasley. Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall is prosecuting the case at the request of Dale County District Attorney Kirke Adams.

The State of Alabama Department of Education released the names of the “State’s Sweet 16 educators” last week in a press release. The Alabama Teacher of the Year program is one of the state’s oldest and most esteemed recognition programs. This year’s 16 finalists have emerged from a highly professional group of more than 150 top educators who submitted their official applications for this state honor.

    The Wiregrass United Way presented $400,000 to 22 local nonprofit agencies around the Wiregrass over the last two weeks. Funding for these grants was received from the Wiregrass Foundation after the Wiregrass United Way completed the challenge of reaching their yearly fundraising goal of $2,777,777.77.

    The Carroll High School (CHS) Track and Field team competed in the Charles Henderson High School Invitational Track Meet Friday, March 24. The girls and boys teams each placed fifth overall at the meet.

    In both the girls' long jump and high jump categories, Carroll’s Alana Coleman earned first place. In the long jump, Coleman soared a stunning 16’6. In the high jump, Coleman scored 4’10. Coleman also placed second in the girls' 300m hurdles with a time of 54.14 seconds.
